Race 9 and 10 at Road America
Road America, one of the most iconic race tracks in North America. I always wanted to race there and it was not disappointing. A very long, over 4mls track that gives you the feeling you are driving somewhere. Lots of elevation changes, long straights, the famous carousel and the infamous kink, and yes the kink is taken flat. I had a previous test race with SCCA at this track just a few weeks earlier and was kind of familiar with it.
On race day we had a full grid of 26 cars. Many drivers with lots of Road America experience. I managed to qualify on 10th place (4th in Masters). During the race I gradually worked my way up to position 2. Unfortunately, I overdrove one turn in one of the last laps and as a result was passed by two other cars to end up at P4, just one shy of the podium. Not happy at all about this. Race 2 was more eventful with a huge crash in T5 that could have been much worse than it looked. You just can’t park one car on top of another. Anyway, finished on P5 in spite of a whole series of problems from radio, balance of car and many other small issues. So, in summary it was great to stay away from all the accidents and collected points but very disappointed about the 4th place in race 1.
